Meniscal Tears

What is it?

A meniscus tear occurs in the rubbery knee cartilage that cushions the shinbone from the thighbone. The meniscus can tear with forceful twisting or rotation of the knee.

What is the cause?

The meniscus can tear with forceful twisting or rotation of the knee. In older adults, degeneration in the knee can contribute to the risk of a torn meniscus.

Signs & Symptoms

  • A popping sensation when the injury occurs.

  • Swelling or stiffness.

  • Pain, especially when twisting or rotating the knee.

  • Difficulty fully straightening the knee.

  • "Locked" feeling when trying to move the knee.

What can we do about it?

There is compelling evidence for physiotherapy as first line of treatment and that physiotherapy is just as effective at managing meniscal tears as surgery. Our therapists at Sports and Spine has undergone extensive training to be able to effectively diagnose and provide you with an appropriate treatment plan. Strengthening of the hip and knee muscles is imperative when recovering from a meniscus tear.
